WHAT IS MIND?

Mind is somehing distinct form the physical body. It also cannot be identified with the spiritual Self. This is because the spiritual Self is the knower, and the mind is not the knower. Mind is an object of knowledge. Just as we perceive an external object, similarly we can perceive our own mind.

Since the mind is an object of knowledge, an object of cognition, it cannot be the knower. You are essencial the knower.

Here is an object, a table for instance. Do the eyes see the table? And do the eyes hear a noise? If the ear hear and the eyes see and the nose smells, what happens? You have so many knowers, so many selves in one individual. But beyond these senses there is one common knower. That knower perceives through the eyes, perceives through the ears, perceives through the nose. That knower not only is distinct form all these organs of perception, but is also distinct from the mind because that knower visualizes the mind, observes the mind. You can observe your mind directly through introspection. Others can observe your mind only indirectly. Only your own mind is observable by you directly through introspectction. All other methods of studying the mind are indirect.

Because the mind is an object of knowledge, consciousness is not intrinsic in the mind. Cousciouness is intrinsic in the knower. The knower is self-aware, self-evident, and you never question your own existence. You take it for granted that you exist: this is self-revealing - that you are.

Why the is knower self-revealing? Because it is self-intelligent. Self awareness is its very essential characteristic. Such is the Self. And what is the mind? The mind is an object of knowledge, such as a table is the object of knowledge. Naturally the mind is devoid of consciouness. Any object of knowledge is devoid of consciouness. This Self, the knower, is the sole self intelligent principle in human personality. So, the mind is dark, material, just as any external object such as a clod of earth is dark and material and devoid of consciouness. Similarly, the mind is also material.

THE NATURE OF MIND

The nature of mind is not easy to understand. This is because the mind is something not tangible and is well hidden for the average human being.

The reason why so many look for mind's nature it is because, consciously or unconsciously, they know that it is from the mind that everything pours and flows. Even physical problems are products of mental conditions or states.

One problem that humans have is that they only tend to care about their minds when they realise that they don't have a sound and healthy one. This is the same as taking care of the physical body only when it is ill. Anyone that wants to have a strong healthy body needs to look after it at all times by sticking to a balanced diet, as well as taking into consideration details like quatity of food and liquids intake and regular hours to do it. One should also take care of the atmosphere one lives in and exposes himself/ herself to, as well as excercise regulary.

Similarly, for the health and development of the mind the following three aspects need not to be neglected:
  • Wholesome mental food
  • Conducive atmosphere
  • Regular mind excercise

All the facets of human development, including physical, intellectual, aesthetic, moral, etc., are not possible without the cultivation of the mind. This is as true as the certainty of death.

The mind is the source of freedom but it also is the source of bondage. Mankind struggle is towards freedom but in the way bondage motives are found. They are traps created by the mind. These traps, called attachments by some, retard the reaching of freedom wich is in the nature of mind.

To surpass and overcome the traps mind training is indispensable. This training can be done in different forms, i.e. by following and practicing the teachings of great leaders. The broadness of this training is very enriching. It is that broadness that many mind development schools or traditions lack.

However here lies a great danger for the undeveloped and unaware. On the other side of the coin safety, which is a by product of knowledge and wisdom, is found. It is to not expose the ignorant traveller to the referred danger that teachers or gurus are advised. And a teacher they must get.

For those who know how to proceed alone many tools and options are at their disposal.
